Sailing on the Baltic sea, one day after having been accepted in the GraWIToN program

Hey everybody! I am Matthieu, I come from the Northern coast of France where I lived for 23 years. I studied Telecommunication Engineering, and got an MRes in photonics in parallel since I was also interested in research. During these studies, and also during my free time, I had the opportunity to travel a lot and I loved it – so much in fact that when I graduated, I was wondering a lot: Should I do a PhD, or go abroad to gather new experiences? Could I do both?

In this position in the GraWIToN program, I do have the chance to do both! Moreover, I am doing it in Pisa which it is a very nice city, not only for its world famous leaning tower but also because it’s a cosmopolitan student city next to the sea. These two points are particularly important for me, since I really enjoy meeting so many new people coming from all over the world – and I also love all the activities related to the sea, especially sailing which has been a passion of mine since I was a child.

I have to admit that it is not always so easy to combine a PhD with the social life in Pisa. But I really like what I am doing, so that makes it easier. I spend my time on site of the GW detector Virgo, in the Optics group. I am working on the fibering of the electro-optics components used for the interferometer. I will not get into too much detail here; I think we will have the opportunity to discover that together through the posts of this blog!
